What is matched betting?

  • A bookmaker offers a promotion; e.g. bet £10, get £30 in free bets.
  • You place a qualifying back bet with the bookmaker.
  • You also place a lay bet on the betting exchange.
  • Those two positions cancel out each other.
  • You accept a small qualifying loss.
  • You then hedge the promotional bet and retain most of its value.

Example

Let’s say a bookmaker’s offer is: Bet £10, get a £30 free bet.

A football is found where the bookmaker offers 2.00 odds on Team A, and a betting exchange offers lay odds of 2.02 on the same outcome.

Place qualifying bet

You:

  • Back Team A with £10 at the bookmaker.
  • Lay Team A for roughly £9.90 on the exchange.

Whichever way the match goes, those two bets mostly cancel out.

You might lose around £0.10–£0.20 due to the small difference in odds and exchange fee.

That small loss unlocks the £30 free bet.

Use the free bet

Now find another closely matched market.

You:

  • Place the £30 free bet at the bookmaker.
  • Lay the same outcome on the exchange.

Because most free bets are stake not returned, you don’t keep the £30 stake itself if it wins; instead you’re converting the value of that free bet into cash.

With the right odds you can convert about 75–85% of the free bet’s value.

With a free bet of £30:

  • Approx. value converted: £24
  • Qualifying loss: £0.20
  • Approx. profit: £23.80

Result

You haven’t made money by predicting the football result; instead you’ve made it from the bookmaker’s promotion, whilst using the exchange to hedge most of the risk.

Exact back and lay stakes should be calculated with a matched betting calculator. The correct amounts depend on the odds, exchange commission and terms of the free bet.

Gambling risk

Matched betting uses real gambling products and can cause financial harm. Only participate if you are 18 or over, never use borrowed money, and stop if gambling is affecting you.
