How the ISA allowance works
For the 2026/2027 tax year, every UK adult has a tax-free ISA allowance of £20,000. You can split this across different types of ISAs, such as a Cash ISA, a Stocks & Shares ISA, or a Lifetime ISA (LISA).
The allowance resets every year on April 6. If you don't use it, you lose it—it doesn't roll over to the next year.
The Lifetime ISA limit
While your total allowance is £20,000, there is a strict sub-limit of £4,000 per tax year for Lifetime ISAs. Any money you put into a LISA counts towards your overall £20,000 limit. The government adds a 25% bonus to your LISA contributions, giving you up to £1,000 free each year.
